German carrier Lufthansa had already decided to retire its iconic Double Decker Airbus A380 jets for several reasons. Still during the pandemic, the group chose to no longer operate its 14 model aircraft. However, a series of factors made the company reconsider the decision.
Initially, Lufthansa intended to reactivate some of the remaining eight A380s. It is worth remembering that the company has already sold six aircraft, which had already been resold to Airbus itself. But now Carsten Spohr, the airline's CEO, has confirmed that all widebodies will be put back into service as early as 2024.
The decision was taken for two main reasons: the high demand for long flights and the delay in deliveries of the Boeing 777-9.
The company's CEO, Carsten Spohr, reported that the widebodies will be in service as early as 2024 and should remain until the end of the decade. Furthermore, the list of destinations served by the superjumbo must be expanded.
The company also confirmed a retrofit of the aircraft's business class, which should be similar to that seen on the A350 and Boeing 787.
