Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways since 1997, will step down on November 5. He will be replaced by Badr Mohammed Al Meer, director of operations at Hamad International Airport.
Al Baker is considered one of the most successful CEOs in world aviation. Under his leadership, Qatar Airways has become one of the world's most renowned airlines, offering high-level service standards and competing with Emirates, another Middle Eastern airline.
Al Baker was also a controversial CEO, such as when he was at the forefront of a dispute with Airbus over premature damage to the A350. The companies reached an agreement in January of this year, so Al Baker called the agreement a “win-win”.
Al Meer is a seasoned executive with over 20 years of experience at Qatar Airways. He is considered a strong candidate for the CEO role, with a strong track record of success in airline operations.
It is not yet clear whether Al Baker will also retire from other roles, which include chief executive of Hamad International Airport and Qatar Duty Free.
