Carsten Spohrn, the CEO of Lufthansa, stated that the Group will have a new subsidiary, City Airlines, which should be launched in 2024 and will serve the company's hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.
The German Group's subsidiary will receive 40 new aircraft, according to Carsten Spohr, in a video sent to employees. The planes must be regional with somewhere between 120 and 140 seats.
“We are preparing a large order for 80 aircraft, 40 of them smaller, with 120 to 140 seats that will go to Cityline 2 (which is how the new company is known),” said the CEO.
Lufthansa had already shown interest in acquiring regional jets, such as the E2 or the A220.
However, the airline will begin its operations using Airbus A319 aircraft, which are already part of the Group today. In fact, the company has already obtained the air operator certificate (AOC) using an A319 registered D-AILX.
The company was created in 2022 and should have started operations in mid-2023.
Although the Group has not specified yet, the planes that best fit the company's needs are the Airbus A220 and the Embraer E-jet. The decision will not be easy, as the Group already operates both aircraft models.
