An INS Vikrant aircraft carrier and an INS Visakhapatnam stealth guided missile destroyer will be delivered to the Indian Navy by the end of 2021, in order to strengthen its defense and its dominance of the Indo-Pacific region. The final tests will be carried out at the Cochin shipyard, being the first warship to be built at this shipyard. Vikrant is a project of the Naval Design Directorate of the Indian Navy.
The two pieces of equipment will be officially commissioned in 2022, as, according to a former Navy commander, “the contractual clauses come to life as soon as the warship is delivered to the Indian Navy, but commissioning takes time, as the vessel's capacity must tested by Navy personnel. ”
The Vikrant is capable of operating up to 40 aircraft and its length is 262 meters, with a width of 62 meters. It has four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines and can reach a speed of up to 28 knots (52 km / h). It will carry two MiG-29K squadrons and ten Kamov Ka-31 helicopters. The aircraft carrier's attack will have a range of more than 15,000 kilometers, with surface-to-air missiles to offer aerial protection.
Visakhapatnam will be the Indian Navy's first destroyer and is being built at Mazagon Dock Limited. It is 163 meters long and has four gas turbines, reaching a speed of more than 30 knots. Its main weapons will be torpedoes for underwater warfare and anti-ship and ground attack missiles.
