In a statement issued on June 23, the Drone Advisory Committee (DAC), a division of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) addressed the issue of gender neutral aviation in order to make aviation more inclusive.

The 217-page document makes recommendations for terms that should be replaced, such as changing the word "airman" to "aviator" to refer to the aviator, the word "man-made" to "manufactured" or "built", among other suggestions.

“Research shows that using gender-neutral language can lead to a more inclusive environment that draws more people into the industry and helps keep them there,” the report states.
The report also notes that the term “cockpit” was used by male crew members to harm female co-workers. Thus, it suggests the word “flight deck” to replace the term.

Another recommendation to ensure inclusion is to use non-gender terms such as “people” instead of “man or “woman”.

“Avoiding imprecise and exclusionary language can create a work environment where all workers feel safe to share their opinions, thus improving psychological and operational safety,” states the report.
US President Joe Biden has already talked about the need for more women in aviation, as 94% of pilots and engineers in the industry in the country are white men.

According to data from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), in Brazil, there was an improvement regarding gender equality in aviation, but the number of male pilots was 46,556, compared to 1465 women in 2017.
