With immunization increasing in many parts of the world, the market heats up. However, immunization remains slow in other parts of the globe, which register lower demand. As a result, global demand for air travel remains low. May 2021 numbers released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The numbers are for the same year 2019, before the pandemic.
The measurement is made in RPK (measurement in paid passenger-kilometer). The use of airplanes also registered a drop of 15.9% in comparison. The total was 65.8%.
“We are starting to see positive indicators, with the opening of some international markets for passengers already vaccinated. The summer season in the northern hemisphere has already started. And it's disappointing that more governments aren't moving quickly to push forward open-border strategies that would help retake tourism jobs and reunite families,” said IATA Director General and CEO Willie Walsh.
When it comes to cargo transportation, the sector registers good numbers, with a recovery in pre-pandemic demand and even growth of 9.4%, also in the comparison of May 2021 with May 2019. The offer registered a drop of 9 .7% in the comparison and the use of airplanes increased 10%, totaling 57.2%.
