India's civil turboprop plane, the Hindustatan 28, will help the Indian government's regional connectivity scheme. The plane is derived from the Dornier Do 228, which Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) itself has been licensed to produce since the 1980s.

The aircraft is the first fixed-wing aircraft manufactured in the country, and is also the company's first foray into the manufacture of civil aircraft. The plane is multifunctional so it can be used in many applications such as VIP transport, passenger transport, air ambulance, flight inspection functions, cloud seeding and recreational activities such as jumping, aerial surveillance, photography and applications of cargo. The plane has STOL characteristics, two engines and a capacity for up to 19 passengers.

“HAL's 'Made in India' civil aircraft reached this milestone, performing engine tests on the ground and taxi at low speed,” reads the official post on the company's Twitter account on 16 August. The tests serve to certify the new aircraft based on India's General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines and were part of the country's 75th Independence Day. See the official post on the external link below.

Sajasl Prakash, CEO of Hindustan, said these tests were a step forward in strengthening regional air connectivity. India's Civil Aviation Directorate said that Hindustan can obtain international type certification for the turboprop, which is based on FAR-23 certification.
