Last Saturday, August 7, Japan's Ministry of Defense announced a plan to start using drones with infrared sensors to detect hypersonic missiles, in response to China and Russia, which are developing high-speed weapons. Furthermore, according to the media, Japan is also seeking to contain the emergence of a new class of ballistic missiles.

The infrared detection system that will be added to the drones has yet to be revealed, but according to the report, the system already exists and was developed to detect ballistic missile attacks. Apparently, the “technology check” was completed in 2019.

The drone, which would be able to fly for long periods and “operate in the airspace closest to the enemy,” would carry the small infrared sensor in the air.

As many countries have begun to develop hypersonic missiles, it is in the interest of many to develop a system capable of detecting such an attack early enough to respond with any chance of success.

In addition, multiple drones, models not yet revealed, will be used to monitor the airspace and transmit the collected data to ground stations.

To be detected, the Chinese hypersonic missiles, DF-17, and the Russians, Avangard, require, according to the media, the development of new detection technologies.
