Australian airline Qantas Airways, as part of its commitment to safety and aligned with several other airlines around the world, said on Wednesday 18 that it will require its employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 so they can continue working. Pilots, crew and employees working at airports will need to be fully vaccinated by November 15th, and other employees will have until March 31, 2022 to be vaccinated.

Employees who for medical reasons cannot receive the immunizing agent will be exempted from the obligation by means of documented proof. However, these cases are expected to be very rare.

According to a survey carried out by the company's staff, 89% of Qantas employees had already been vaccinated or planned to be vaccinated, and three-quarters of employees thought this should be a requirement.

Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, said: "It is clear that vaccines are the only way to end the cycle of blockades and closures on borders."

About 2,500 Qantas employees have been on leave without pay for at least two months because of new restrictions imposed in Australia, which have caused a drop in demand for domestic travel. In this sense, the demand for vaccination is also an attempt to deal with this problem.

In addition, the airline has also stated that it will require vaccination of all international passengers once Australia's borders are reopened. Joyce also stated that the company is considering applying such a requirement to domestic passengers as well.

For travelers from New South Wales, there is already a requirement for at least one dose of the vaccine to enter the state of Western Australia.

Other airlines, such as United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, as well as several Asian airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific, also require vaccinations for their employees.
