The 34 satellites intended to provide OneWeb's broadband internet were launched into low earth orbit. OneWeb now has 288 satellites. By the end of the project, in 2022, the company has plans to provide worldwide internet and have around 650 spacecraft in orbit.
The rocket used to launch the satellites was the Russian Soyuz, which, in turn, was launched by the European company, Arianespace, from the Russian cosmodrome at Baikonur, Kazakhstan. The successful mission took place on August 22, after having been postponed twice. This was the fifth launch of OneWeb satellites this year.
Other projects similar to this one are underway. Elon Musk, founder of space company SpaceX, has the Starlink network, with more than 1500 satellites in orbit. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon has a network-like project called Kuiper.
OneWeb's next satellite launch is expected in September this year.
