Earlier this month, on September 6, a position of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was attacked by two Royal Air Force (RAF) Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 fighters. The offensive came after Islamic State attacked Iraqi troops carrying out security operations about 30 miles south of Erbil, in an area of ""heavy vegetation.
The RAF fighters used a single laser/GPS guided bomb, a 227 kg Paveway IV, which wiped out the insurgents.
Wing Commander 'Dutch' Holland, commanding officer of the RAF's 903rd Expeditionary Air Wing, said: “The importance of maintaining our focus on Operation Shader over the past few months was highlighted in early September when this air station's Typhoons carried out an attack against fighters from Daesh (Islamic State) who were involved with Iraqi forces causing a 'troop contact' scenario. The attack, using a Paveway IV, neutralized the threat and provided stability and security for the troops involved.”
The Paveway IV is the new variation of the Paveway pump family. Earlier versions are guided with just a laser projected by another aircraft or by a ground designator, while the IV version, in addition, is also guided by GPS/Inertial Navigation, expanding its operating possibilities.
Operation Shader is the name given to the UK's participation in the ongoing military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
