Seeking to reduce industry carbonization and lower emissions, Emirates and GE Aviation have entered into a preliminary partnership (MoU) to develop a program that will use a Boeing 777-300ER operating at 100% SAF by the end of 2022.

The aircraft's engines will be GE90, which is already certified to use a petroleum-derived Jet A or Jet A-1, but with a 50% blend of SAF. As the use of SAF grows in the industry, companies are looking for technologies that further explore its use. GE wants to develop technologies for the use of 100% SAF, without any type of mixture.

The agreement between GE Aviation and Emirates aims to show that large commercial aviation can use SAF in order to be more sustainable without generating operational problems. The partnership will have the collaboration of authorities to guarantee the certification and all the necessary logistics.

“Our agreement with GE Aviation will advance the industry's collective commitment to zero emissions, and we look forward to continuing this collaboration. Our partnership with GE Aviation to carry out the test flight will be an important step towards ensuring 100% SAF flight certification,” said Adel Al Redha, Chief Operating Officer, Emirates.

GE Aviation has been working on the assessment and qualification of SAF since 2007 in collaboration with other companies. Emirates, in turn, had its first flight with SAF in 2017.
