The new version of China's largest civil helicopter made its maiden flight on Tuesday (17), as announced by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (Avic). In this way, China will enter the league of nations that manufacture large helicopters, as is already the case with Russia and the USA.
To ensure safety, the aircraft underwent a 50-hour endurance test called the “iron bird” (a device to test the functions of the aircraft).
The helicopter is an upgrade of the AC313 and was developed to serve air rescues across the country. The aircraft is equipped with the world's most powerful and reliable new turboshaft engine, along with other upgraded systems such as new avionics. The helicopter has a health and usage monitoring system, as well as an anti-icing device for the rotor blades.
The aircraft has a wider fuselage, larger interior space, a sloping tail rotor, new gearboxes and control systems, said Liu Wenqi, the helicopter's chief designer. This allows the helicopter to operate in visual and instrument flights, as well as in difficult weather conditions.
The AC313A's new systems have improved the aircraft's navigation, safety and reduced crew workload, according to Cao Xi, lead systems development.
The maximum take-off weight is 13.8 tons, its capacity is 28 passengers. Delivery of the first AC313A units is expected to start by 2025
