British engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is in the final stages of building a demonstrator for the gigantic 3.5-meter-diameter fan engine. Rolls Royce will demonstrate technologies that can improve the efficiency of aviation engines.

The UtraFan is considered the largest aeronautical engine in the world, with a total diameter of about 4 meters, and up to 25% more efficient than the first generation of Trent engines. Despite the big fan, the engine uses advanced materials, such as the titanium and carbon system, which promise to keep the weight at low levels.

The UltrafFan will have a high bypass ratio, which should make the engine even more efficient.

In addition to greater energy efficiency, the engine will emit 40% less nitrogen oxides and 35% less noise compared to the first generation Trent. In addition, the engine will have options that offer between 25,000 to 100,000 lbs of thrust.

The engine is expected to enter aircraft service within the next decade. However, technologies that are validated in this engine can also be used in current Trent, further increasing efficiency.

The demonstrator test is scheduled to take place later this year, and should be filled 100% with SAF.
