Russia's biggest airline, Aeroflot, which is without access to Western planemakers, will boost the Russian aviation industry with a large order for locally-made planes.

The airline plans to renew its fleet. Although this has been known since June, the request has now been detailed in a note from a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 26.

The order includes 210 units of the Irkut MC-21 model, already with the national PD-14 engines. In addition, 73 units of the Sukhoi Superjet (SSJ100) and 40 more units of the Tupolev Tu-214 will be ordered. The total order value is estimated to be $23 billion.

The airline's director general, Sergei Aleksandrovsky, said the company will hire another 3,500 pilots and more flight simulators for training.

He stressed that the order is in line with the growth plan of the local aviation industry until 2030.

Currently, in addition to Russian-made planes, the airline has 120 models of the Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and 777 family. According to information from the Reuters agency, some of the western planes are already undergoing cannibalization in order to keep the fleet flying.

The UAC (United Aircraft Corporation), responsible for the SSJ100 and MC-21 planes, should now focus on certifying the planes with Russian components, something that has not yet happened.
