The company Ampaire was founded in 2016 with the aim of developing safer, quieter, cleaner and cheaper aircraft. A Cessna Caravan converted into hybrid-electric by the company made its first flight on November 18, around 8 am local time.
The test flight departed from Camarillo Airport in the United States and tested various power settings. The landing took place without problems at the same take-off airfield after 33 minutes.
“The Eco Caravan drive system worked exactly as expected. Everything was calm and silent. All temperature and power measurements were normal,” said Elliot Seguin, the test pilot.
The airline aims to obtain FAA certification on its hybrid-electric drive system by 2024. Approval will only require a supplemental certificate, as the aircraft itself is already certified.
The Eco Caravan consumes up to 70% less fuel than the initial standard. If the fuel used is SAF, CO2 emissions can be reduced to very low levels – close to zero. In addition, the Eco Caravan's operating costs can be up to 40% lower when compared to a conventional Cessna Caravan.
The aircraft's propulsion set comprises a piston engine from the German manufacturer Red Aircraft and another electric thruster, which generate 765 hp of power when combined. In the original version, the Caravan is propelled by the Pratt turboprop
