The problem that affects the distribution chain in the world has not yet ended, which is worse in Russia, since the lack of components adds to the fact that the country is under sanctions. Thus, the Russian company Azimuth will receive a single Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional aircraft equipped with used engines.
The Aircraft uses the SaM146 turbofan engine produced by PowerJet, a joint venture between the French company Snecma and the Russian NPO Saturn. However, without the French company, Russia is looking for a locally produced engine to replace it.
The idea of ""using second-hand engines came so that the plane could be delivered later this year. The engines come from a pool of aircraft components created in 2019 and are in excellent condition.
The PD-8 high-bypass turbofan, which is based on the larger PD-14 variant developed by Rostec subsidiary United Engine Corporation (UEC), appeared to be the best option to replace the SaM146 engine. However, the use of this engine has yet to be certified. Rostec expects certification in 2023 and start of deliveries in 2024.
“The engines installed on the Azimuth aircraft are in excellent condition. The use of second-hand engines will not have an impact on flight operations and safety. They are reliable,” said the UAC (United Aircraft Corporation).
This would be the first time in Russian domestic aviation history that a new plane is delivered with used engines. However, it may not be the last, as at least 10 more planes of the model are to be delivered with used engines for different Russian airlines.
