Russian researchers advance in the design of the freighter that will be the successor to the Antonov An-124. The aircraft, called 'Slon', which means 'elephant', had its project started 5 years ago, with an expected load capacity of between 150-180 tons. The Antonov An-124 has a capacity of 150 tons.
Since July, tests have been carried out aiming at greater capacity for the future freighter. Now, researchers are looking to develop wings with improvements in technology and design, aiming at aerodynamic improvements.
Studies at the Russian Central Institute of Aerodynamics are focused on wingtips. Studies show aerodynamic improvements, but the wings may need a folding mechanism. This is because the reduced wingspan could allow the aircraft to operate at a greater number of airports.
The plane's engine must be a Russian-made PD-35 turbofan. The engine is from the same family as the PD-14, which already equips the Irkut MC-21, and the PD-8, for the SSJ New.
“This aircraft will be designed to transport heavy and bulky loads over a distance of around 7,000 kilometers [4,349 miles] at a speed of 850 km/h [528.13 mph]”, informs the Institute.
