To buy foreign-made aircraft, the Russian government has allocated about 300 billion rubles ($3.9 billion). This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Transport of Russia, Vitaly Savelyev.
Aeroflot has already used the funds to purchase ten long-haul aircraft," Savelyev was quoted as saying by TASS during a report at a meeting of the Committee on Transport and Transport Infrastructure Development in the State Duma.
The purchase in question took place at the end of last year as sanctions imposed by Western countries, imposed since the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine, were relaxed in April.
In addition, Aeroflot announced that it has purchased eight Airbus A330s.
Savelyev also said that more than 70 aircraft of Russian airlines remained abroad after the imposition of sanctions.
"We are trying to buy aircraft from foreign lessors, we are well aware of this issue, and the government has already allocated (...) about 300 billion rubles," he said.
According to the decision of the Russian authorities, Russian carriers did not return the aircraft that remained in Russia after the sanctions. Instead, the country continued operating them and moved them to the domestic registry. The residual value of more than 500 aircraft from foreign lessors that remained in Russia is estimated at $20 billion, Savelyev said in March 2022.
