Indonesian low-cost carrier TransNusa has started a 100-hour training campaign with COMAC's Chinese ARJ21 regional jet.

The ARJ21-700 was received in December last year, making TransNusa the first foreign operator of the model. The training precedes the entry of the aircraft into passenger service.

The carrier has orders for 30 of the type and will use the plane on routes between Jakarta, Denpasar and Yogyakarta. TransNusa has not yet specified a date for entry into commercial service. The aircraft accommodates up to 95 passengers.

The planes are the result of a leasing agreement with China Aircraft Leasing Group (CALC). In 2016, CALC placed an order for 30 aircraft of the type, with options for a further 30, in a deal whose list value was around US$2.3 billion at the time.

The ARJ21-700 is the first passenger jet built in China. By the end of 2022, the type already had 690 orders from 25 customers. More than 100 aircraft have already been delivered to 9 domestic and foreign customers.

Another Chinese jet, but one that competes with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, is the COMAC C919, which is also due to debut in April and is also undergoing 100-hour flight training. The plane will begin commercial service on China Eastern Airlines.
