The Russian Ministry of Defense said that two Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bombers were intercepted by a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jet while moving towards the Russian border last Monday (20). The bombers were about 60 km from Russian airspace.
The Russian embassy in the US posted on twitter: "Russian air defense radars detected 2 air targets flying in the direction of Russia's state border over the Baltic Sea. The targets were classified as 2 US Air Force B-52H strategic bombers A Su-35 fighter scrambled to avoid a violation of Russia's state border.
A video supposedly made by the pilot of the Su-35 showing the moment was also published on telegram. The video is on the external link below.
After the B-52 aircraft moved away from the Russian border, the Su-35 returned to its base.
This is a common occurrence in the region. Russia reported that the Su-35 was in line with international airspace rules.
However, the interception took place against a background of rising tensions between Russia and the US after an intercept and downing of a US MQ-9 Reaper Drone by two Russian Su-27 fighters.
On the 17th, Russia awarded prizes to the Sukhoi Su-27 fighter pilots involved in the downing of the Reaper drone.
