Hainan Airlines Group of China has signed a deal for up to 100 aircraft from COMAC, a Chinese manufacturer. This is a firm order for 30 COMAC C919 narrowbodies, with options for a further 30, and a letter of intent for 40 ARJ21s. However, the deadline for receiving the planes is still unknown.
The group's subsidiary airlines, traditionally Boeing operators, Urumqi Air and Suparna Airlines, will receive the C919 jets. However, it is not yet known who will be the operator of the ARJ21. Urumqi Air's current fleet consists of 16 Boeing 737-800s.
The COMAC C919 is a narrowbody that accommodates up to 168 passengers, with a range of between 4,075 and 5,555 km and that directly rivals the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. By January 2023, COMAC had already accumulated more than 1,200 orders for the C919, while the ARJ-21 has already had over 100 units delivered.
China Eastern Airlines has already taken delivery of its first COMAC C919 at the end of 2022, but the company has faced technical problems and has yet to make its first commercial flight. This means that the plane has not yet entered service.
Although COMAC began testing the C919 with the engine made in-house, the plane still uses parts manufactured abroad, such as the CFM Leap-1C engines.
