The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has demonstrated that airlines in Latin America use very little sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and governments must do something so that countries do not fall behind in the adoption of this fuel.
Peter Cerda, IATA's regional vice president for the Americas, says that without government action, Latin America is further away from meeting the net zero emissions target. He claims that governments need to change the mindset about environmental responsibility, abandoning green taxation and encouraging the production of SAF.
Conventional fuel is used on a large scale and there are no plans to adopt AFS. "If governments understood that SAF production can become a global leader and stimulate more jobs, more income for their countries, it would motivate them to promote production," he said.
He notes that Latin America could be a leader in the use and production of SAF, thanks to its geography and natural resources.
