A Cessna 560 Citation business jet that took off from Tennessee bound for New York stopped responding to air traffic control, diverting its route near Washington D.C. The US Air Force sent F-16 jets to intercept the plane.
According to Reuters, the fighter jets caused a sonic boom over the city during the chase, causing people in the area to wonder. The fighters followed the plane and tried to contact it, but without success. The F-16 jets continued to follow the Cessna, which ended up crashing into a mountain in Virginia.
The case is being investigated by competent authorities. It is not yet known what caused the plane to divert to Washington D.C. One possibility is that the cabin has depressurized, causing the passengers and pilot to lose consciousness.
On the plane were the pilot, daughter, nanny and granddaughter of the owner of Encore Motors, John Rumpel, which owned the aircraft. It is not yet known if the aircraft had a co-pilot. Sadly, everyone on board lost their lives.
