Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea is undergoing a fleet renewal project. The company operates Boeing 737, Boeing 767, Fokker 70, Fokker 100 and Bombadier Dash 8 jets. On Monday, June 5, an order for two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners was announced. The company should receive the jets in 2026.
With the widebodies, the company should strengthen its long-distance network. The airline said the planes should enable new routes from the city of Port Moresby. The airline will also benefit from international routes in the Asia-Pacific region. Nowadays, these flights are operated by the Boeing 737 and the two Boeing 767s.
Although Boeing has worked with Air Niugini for more than 45 years, this is the airline's first Dreamliner order. The new aircraft will replace the older Boeing 767s, which are 28 and 32 years old. Dreamliners have a 25% higher efficiency when compared to the old B767.
In addition, the company is looking for a regional aircraft to replace its aging Fokker 70/100. One possibility that is being considered is the acquisition of Embraer's E195-E2, but the Airbus A220 is also vying for places at the company.
