The Carbon Disclosure Project recognized Avianca as one of the companies most committed to the environment. The airline received classification B, one of the highest scores granted by the international organization.
The classification takes into account the company's actions regarding climate change, such as governance issues, risks and opportunities, business strategy, objectives and behavior, methodology and data on emissions, energy, biodiversity, carbon prices, among others.
The company strives to reduce its environmental footprint by streamlining its operations and investing in new technologies. In 2022 alone, the company offset 735,000 tons of CO2, a number that represents 90% of the emissions generated by the company's entire domestic operation in Colombia. The airline has a platform that allows customers and employees to offset the footprint of their flights.
Avianca says that its fuel-efficient software managed to avoid the emission of 59,549 tonnes of CO2, resulting in a reduction of more than 15% in CO2 emissions per passenger.
Other changes also made a difference, such as the use of solar energy in the maintenance hangars and the recycling of non-hazardous waste.
The airline was recertified under the ISO 14001:2015 standard, for the Environmental Management System for its administrative buildings in Bogotá and maintenance of aircraft and ground support equipment in Medellín, Ecuador and El Salvador.
