The Angolan airline, TAAG Angola, is one of the few African airlines that managed to recover from the effects of the covid 19 pandemic, including making record profits in the 2022 fiscal year, going against what the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said, that African companies were not expected to turn a profit before 2024.
"There was a mix of many elements. We renegotiated many contracts, established routes, improved productivity and took some cost-cutting measures that affected the entire company, starting with me. In the end, we made a profit in terms of Kwanzas (Kz – the local currency), but the Kwanza was strongly affected by the changes, so when you see the accounts in US dollars, there is a loss due to this Kwanza weakness", said the company's CEO, Eduardo Fairen.
The company, which came close to closing activities during the worst time of the pandemic, is now celebrating greater passenger numbers.
The airline's fleet comprises 21 aircraft, including six Boeing 737-700s, five Boeing 777-300ERs, three 777-200ERs, six DHC-8-Q400s and one Airbus A330-200. The airline is planning to grow its fleet to 50 aircraft over the next three and a half years.
