Global freight company FedEx is seeing demand for air cargo drop to levels that no longer justify having so many planes in its fleet. Therefore, the company is planning to retire 29 of its planes.
20 planes will be put into storage during fiscal 2024, while the other 9 MD-11Fs are already set for retirement, according to CEO Raj Subramaniam.
This is in line with the company's policy of reducing its operating costs at a time when demand is showing clear signs of reduction.
Despite the reduction, the company's fleet should increase by the end of this year with the arrival of its new Boeing 767F. These planes are supposed to replace the old MD-11F.
The company's focus now is to improve the efficiency of operations.
In the last fiscal year alone, the company retired 18 aircraft, including the MD-11, Boeing 757-200 and Airbus A300-600.
In order to meet the company's fleet modernization requirements, 55 new aircraft have already been ordered for the next two fiscal years, including Boeing 767s, Boeing 777s, Cessna 408 SkyCourier and ATR 72-600s.
