The Latin American and Caribbean Association (ALTA) shows in its latest report that Brazil, Mexico and Colombia have already recovered their domestic and international traffic levels.

The report published on July 12, 2023 shows that 29.8 million passengers were transported in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, which represents an increase of 1.8% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

When it comes to domestic flights alone, traffic grew 10.8% in May in Brazil. This was the first time that Brazilian traffic surpassed pre-pandemic levels. The increase was 3%, totaling 7.3 million passengers transported in the period. These figures lead Brazil to have the most important domestic traffic in the region, accounting for 81% of total traffic in May.

Mexico was 12% above its pre-pandemic levels, while Argentina and Chile surpassed their 2019 levels at 9% and 4%, respectively.

In Venezuela, there was a 58% increase in domestic flights compared to May 2019.

International intra-LAC traffic has been recovering slowly, still remaining at a level 9.8% lower than the same period in 2019.

Also, José Ricardo Botelho, executive director and CEO of ALTA.
He emphasizes that the complete recovery is uncertain: “The World Bank’s June estimates point to the Latin America and Caribbean region slowing its growth to 1.5% in 2023, which represents a drop of 0.2 point in relation to the forecast January 2023”.

The economic recovery of the post-pandemic region has been inconsistent, and paradoxically some of the countries with the lowest economic growth have been the ones that transported the most passengers, such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile.
