The second C919, China's first self-developed narrow-body jet, was delivered to its first global customer, China Eastern Airlines, on Sunday morning in Shanghai.
Seven months after receiving the first one, the plane will enter service in August. The first has not yet started regular services. Both will fly between Shanghai and Chengdu, in Sichuan province.
"The reason we are flying the C919 between Shanghai and Chengdu for the first time is because it is a suitable flight distance, and the east-west flight will allow the jet to better adapt to environmental conditions, including temperature and humidity," said Li Yangmin, general manager of China Eastern.
China Eastern Airlines was the first customer of the narrowbody plane, which will serve more Chinese routes in the future.
"The delivery of a second C919 for commercial operation demonstrates that China's aviation industry has entered the stage of using more self-developed jets. As more C919 jets are put into commercial use, their safety will increase and their manufacturer, Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China, will be more in line with market demand,” said Zheng Hongfeng, founder and CEO of VariFlight, an aviation data services and solutions provider.
The new plane is configured in two classes, just like the first, with a total of 164 passengers, 8 in business class and the remaining 156 in economy class.
