Battery giant CATL is starting a joint venture with state-owned aircraft manufacturer COMAC to produce electric aircraft. The new company, called COMAC CATL Aviation, is backed by Shanghai Jiaotong University.
CATL is one of the largest manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The company has the largest share and global market in the production of lithium-ion batteries.
The new company will develop electric aircraft, as well as battery sales and maintenance. The joint venture is led by Qian Zhongyan, former deputy chief designer of the COMAC C919 program, according to the filing.
Development of an electric aircraft has already started at COMAC Beijing Aircraft Technology Research Institute. The project is for a fixed-wing electric aircraft, as Yicai Global writes. The size of this electric aircraft is still unknown.
